It’s faster, it fits in one trench, and it violates every access control manufacturer’s spec sheet we’ve ever read. Within months, the property manager starts getting calls about phantom card reads, doors locking and unlocking on their own, and credentials that work Tuesday but fail Wednesday. The interference from AC power induces voltage on the low-voltage data lines. The fix is tearing it out and running it again, properly separated.

Mistake 1: Running Wiegand Cable Too Close to AC Power

Wiegand protocol, the standard for most card readers, uses unshielded, unbalanced data transmission at very low voltage. That makes it susceptible to electromagnetic interference from nearby AC power lines. Every manufacturer, from DoorKing to Linear, specifies minimum separation distances in their installation manuals. Most call for at least 12 inches from parallel AC runs, and 6 inches if crossing at 90 degrees.

We inspected a job in East Sacramento last spring where a general contractor had bundled Wiegand cable with gate motor power in a single PVC run. The system worked for about six weeks. Then residents started reporting that their fobs would unlock the pedestrian gate at 7 AM but get rejected at 7 PM. The voltage fluctuation from the motor draw during peak evening traffic was enough to corrupt the Wiegand data stream. We re-pulled shielded cable in a separate conduit, problem solved.

Twisted-pair Cat5 or Cat6 is not a substitute here. We’ve seen installers try it because it’s cheaper and they already have it on the truck. Wiegand readers expect a specific impedance and wire gauge. Cat5’s twisted pairs are designed for balanced differential signaling, not Wiegand’s single-ended format. The result is intermittent communication failures that look like bad readers or faulty panels but are actually cable mismatch.

What to do instead:

  • Use shielded, 22-gauge stranded cable specifically rated for Wiegand
  • Maintain 12-inch minimum separation from 120V AC runs
  • Ground the shield at the panel end only, never both ends
  • Never share conduit with motor power, landscape lighting, or irrigation controls

Mistake 2: Mismatched Credential Bit Formats

This one drives property managers crazy because it looks like a security breach. A resident swipes their card, the reader flashes red, the log shows “access denied,” and everyone assumes someone cloned a credential or hacked the database. What’s actually happening is usually a bit-format mismatch between the reader and the panel.

Standard proximity credentials come in several formats. The most common is 26-bit H10301, an older open format. But many newer installations use 37-bit formats for larger credential pools, or proprietary formats for added security. When you install a 37-bit reader on a panel still configured for 26-bit, the panel receives more data bits than it expects. It parses them wrong, gets a facility code or card number that doesn’t match any programmed credential, and denies access. The credential is fine. The reader is fine. The panel is fine. They just don’t speak the same dialect.

We got called to a Viking system in Natomas where the HOA had upgraded readers to support a new fob order but never updated the panel configuration. Random residents were locked out at random times. Before installing any reader, verify three things: the bit format, the facility code, and the card number range. Write them down. If you’re mixing credential generations on one system, confirm the panel supports multiple formats or plan to convert everything to match.

Mistake 3: Skipping Surge Protection on Telephone Entry Lines

Telephone entry systems, like DoorKing or BFT units with dial-out capability, connect to the public telephone network through standard copper POTS lines or VoIP adapters. That copper connection is a direct path for lightning-induced surges from the telco infrastructure. A single strike can travel the line, enter your entry board, and destroy the dialer module, the power supply, and sometimes the main processor.

The replacement cost for a fried DoorKing 1833 board runs around $900. A UL-listed surge protector designed for telephone lines costs $40. We’ve replaced at least a dozen boards in Sacramento over the years where a surge protector would have saved the entire repair.

Sacramento’s summer thunderstorms aren’t as dramatic as the Midwest, but our dry-season lightning and winter wind events generate enough induced voltage on long copper runs to do damage. Install surge protection at both ends of any telephone line run: at the demarc where the line enters the property, and at the entry system itself. For VoIP installations, protect the network path as well. The protector should clamp fast enough to catch the rise time of a typical lightning-induced surge, usually under 1 nanosecond response time.

Mistake 4: Leaving Networked Access Control on DHCP

Modern IP-based access control panels, including many Linear and Ghost Controls networked systems, connect to your LAN for software management and remote monitoring. During setup, it’s tempting to leave the panel on DHCP automatic addressing because it’s faster than configuring a static IP. That works fine until your router reboots.

When the router comes back online, it may assign a different IP address to the panel than it had before. Your access control software is still pointing to the old address. Suddenly you can’t communicate with any reader, can’t update credentials, can’t pull event logs. Every credential in the system still works in standalone mode, but you have no management capability, and if the panel was configured to check a server for permissions, those checks fail.

We had a commercial property in Midtown Sacramento call us in a panic after a Comcast outage and router restart. Their Linear system had been running fine for eight months. After the reboot, the software couldn’t find the panel. The previous installer had left everything on DHCP. The IP had shifted by one digit. Static IP configuration takes slightly longer at install but eliminates this entire failure mode. Document the address, subnet, gateway, and DNS settings in your system binder. Mistake 5: Failing to Document Factory Default Credentials

Every access control panel ships with factory default login credentials. The first thing any competent installer does is change them for security. The second thing any competent installer does is write them down and store them securely. We’ve seen too many jobs where step two never happened.

Here’s how this goes wrong. A power surge or brownout causes the panel to reset to factory defaults. Or a firmware update fails and requires a factory restore. Or you need to replace a failed panel with the same model and restore the configuration. Without the original default credentials, you have no way to access the reset panel. Some manufacturers can recover this with proof of purchase and a support call. Others can’t. We’ve seen systems rendered completely unusable, requiring full replacement, because nobody wrote down the factory password.

We document defaults on every job we touch. We also record the new credentials we set, store them in our job file, and provide a sealed copy to the property owner. If you’re managing your own system, do the same. A locked-out access control panel is a security problem and an expensive service call, or worse, a full replacement.
